Are Cub Cadet zero turns any good? ›

Sure, you could use a standard push mower or even an electric one, but for efficiency and convenience nothing beats using a zero-turn riding mower. Cub Cadet zero-turn riding mowers are some of the most popular in today's market due to their quality design and a perfect balance between speed and power.

Back in 2023, I would have suggested the Cub Cadet is the superior mower, given the comfort levels and my experience. But the new upgrades to the Toro TimeCutter have made it a supremely comfortable ride and heavier duty than the Cub Cadet ZT1.

The exception may be some Cub Cadet, Husqvarna and John Deere lawn tractors intended for commercial use, which are designed to go for 400-500 hours. Many of these higher-end mowers have hour meters that track their usage. If you're considering buying a used machine, look for these warning signs.

Choosing the right zero-turn depends on the size of the area you are mowing. Generally, if it is less than an acre, a cutting width of 34"-42" may be enough. For one to three acres, a 42"-54" mower deck is usually a good option. For three and five acres, you'll probably want a cutting width of 48", 54", or more.

In general, a mower with a 42-inch deck is sufficient to cut a 2-acre lot (that takes into account that the house, driveway, outbuildings and various landscape features are taking up some of that space). Use a mower with a larger deck to cut anything over 2 acres.
