The California Highway Patrol has disclosed that the pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was struck in the No. 1 lane, which is typically the far-left or fast lane on the freeway.

Initial reports indicate that a tractor-trailer may have been involved in the collision, although further details are sparse at this time.

The CHP has not released additional information pending a thorough investigation, and they are appealing to any witnesses who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the accident to come forward with any information that could aid in their investigation.

Emergency responders from the Riverside County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Despite their efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the victim is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

The impact of the incident on traffic was significant, causing all westbound lanes of the freeway to come to a complete halt. According to CHP officials, only the HOV lane was reopened by 11:30 a.m., which led to substantial traffic congestion and delays for morning commuters.

A Sigalert, which is issued in Southern California for traffic incidents expected to cause significant disruption, was promptly declared.

Officers indicated that they anticipated reopening all lanes following a preliminary investigation by the coroner’s office, which was expected to conclude shortly after 1 p.m. In the interim, motorists were directed to either use the HOV lane or divert into alternate routes through Moreno Valley.

In cases like this, where a pedestrian is tragically killed in a traffic accident, various forms of compensation might be available to the victim’s family. Compensation can include but is not limited to, funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and loss of financial support.

In addition, if it is determined that the driver of the vehicle was at fault due to negligence or reckless behavior, punitive damages might also be sought to punish the wrongdoer and deter similar conduct in the future.
